The Maratón Gran Canaria ’20 LaLigaSports has been officially presented in the press room of the Gran Canaria Arena in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the city that will host the first edition of the race on May 22, 23 and 24, 2020. The event has counted with the presence of Josep Guardiola, the managing director;Francisco Castellano, Sports minister of the Gran Canaria Cabildo; Carlos Álamo, Turism minister of the Gran Canaria Cabildo; Aridany Romero, Sports councilor in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria city council; Miguel Ángel Ramírez, UD Las Palmas president; José Carlos Martín, commissioner in the Local Police and Eulalia Guerra, security consultant for the city council.
The race is organized by The Seagull Sportive S.L. with the collaboration of LaLigaSports and the Real Federación Española de Atletismo (RFEA) and will be live broadcasted by LaLigaSportsTV. Francisco Castellano stated that “the island has always been prepared to develope any kind of projects. We could not say no to this opportunity”. Carlos Álamo also pointed out the benefits of bringing the marathon to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. “We host consolidated events and others that are good prospects to grow because we are a model for other cities. This island is a reality and we want the whole world to know it”. Aridany Romero added that “this is a different race from all the ones that we already have as we will be gathering all the fanbases of LaLiga teams”.
Josep Guardiola expressed his gratitude for the predisposition and the reception of the island authorities and has revealed two novelties for Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd: the Young Race and the Abuel@ton. “The Young Race is addressed to all the high school teenagers and will be sponsored by a player of UD Las Palmas first team; whereas the Abuel@ton will appeal all the grandparents and their grandchildren and will be sponsored by an iconic Canary sportsman”.
In the presentation, it was also announced the collaboration between the Maratón Gran Canaria ’20 LaLigaSports and the UD Las Palmas. Its president, Miguel Ángel Ramírez, has assured that they will “take active part in the race and give full support to the project from our Fundation, within the framework of the club’s 70th anniversary celebration. The UD Las Palmas members and fans will receive 50% and 25%discounts in the registration of any of the three categories of the race: individual marathon, individual half-marathon or relay marathon (as long as one of the team runners is a member or a fan).
